In August 2001, the Ministry of
Construction sent a delegation led by Mr. Wang Zemin, the President of the
Landscape Architecture Corporation of China and Mrs. Cao Nanyan, the Head of
Landscape Office of Department of Urban Construction of the Ministry of
Construction to Germany to hold talks with the organizing committee on China's
participation, the scheme design for Chinese Garden at IGA 2003 Rostock and
other related issues. The official participation agreement was signed. The
architects and project management professionals responsible for the
construction of the Chinese Garden also visited the site and got familiar with
the matters related to the execution of the project. Their inspection to the
site and local conditions helped to lay a solid foundation for the subsequent
preparation works.

Meeting with the Mayor of
Rostock City

In July 2000 the Chancellor of
the Federal republic of Germany, mr. Gerhard Schroder, wrote a letter to our
premier minister, Mr. Zhu Rongji to invite China to participate in the
International Garden Exhibition, Rostock, Germany in 2003 (IGA 2003 Rostock).
The Ministry of Construction submitted a document "Request on the
Participation in the International Garden Exhibition, Rostock, Germany in 2003
(IGA 2003 Rostock)" to the State Council through the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs after discussion with the China Council for the promotion of
International Trade. Premier Zhu Rongji, Vice Premier Li Lanqing and Wen
Jiabao approved the report and instructed that the Ministry of Construction be
responsible for the supervision of the construction of a Chinese Garden
at IGA 2003 Rostock and the Landscape Architecture Corporation of China (LAC)
be in charge of the signing of the contract, the design works and the
execution of the Chinese Garden. Before the inspection to the site of IGA
Rostock, we made
full preparation for the design of the Chinese garden and completed the
schematic design for the participation. After site inspection and further
discussion with German side, the architects worked all the night on the
revision of the original schematic design and eventually formed the final
working scheme. The excellent working scheme was highly praised by the German
authority. The framed working scheme drawing was donated as a present during
the Chinese Week at IGA 2003 Rostock by the
Ministry of Construction to Rostock City.
